FRIDAY'S GAME VS. CHICAGO WHITE SOX: You knew when at the end of the top of the first inning the White Sox had six runs on two hits, this was not going to be our day. The Cubs looked about as bad as they have looked all year. Starter Shawn Estes lasted one inning, throwing 52 pitches in that one inning. Estes and Matt Clement have been the weak links in the rotation so far and they cannot continue to be mediocre if the Cubs have any chance to win the division. CARLOS LEZCANO AWARD: Introducing the Carlos Lezcano Award for poor performance by a Cubs' outfielder. The Carlos Lezcano Award to Sammy Sosa. Sosa went 0 for 4 and lost a fly ball in the sun. As Harry would have asked, "How can a guy from the Dominican Republic lose the ball in the sun?" Friday, June 20, 2003
FOR WHOM THE BELLHORN TOILS IN COLORADO, YES WAY JOSE HERNANDEZ RETURNS: The Cubs have traded Mark Bellhorn and a minor leaguer to the Colorado Rockies for ex-Cub infielder Jose Hernandez. Essentially we got rid of a guy who was not hitting to reacquire a guy who was not hitting. What is really worrying is if Jose Hernandez cannot hit in Coors Field, where can he hit? THURSDAY'S GAME AT CINCINNATI: Mark Prior pitched ok but the offense was weak again as the Cubs fell to the Reds 3-1. A bottom of the seventh-inning fight between Paul Wilson of the Reds and Kyle Farnsworth of the Cubs was the highlight of this game as Farnsworth looked like a linebacker when he tackled Wilson to the ground. WEDNESDAY'S GAME AT CINCINNATI: Kerry Wood pitched outstanding on Wednesday night pitching a no-hitter into the sixth inning. Sammy Sosa came back with a blast hitting a towering homerun to center as the Cubs won 4-1. Wednesday, June 18, 2003
SORRY: Sorry I have not gotten around to blogging the last few series. Great series by the Cubs versus the New York Yankees and Baltimore. The Toronto series the Cubs wound up going 1-2. TUESDAY'S GAME AT CINCINNATI: Carlos Zambrano pitched a good game last night pitching eight innings giving up only one run. Weak offensive performance by the Cubs as they only scored one run as well. The Reds won the game in the bottom of the tenth on a double by Sean Casey off of Todd Wellemeyer. SAMMY IS BACK TONIGHT: Sammy Sosa's seven game suspension is over and will be back in the lineup tonight. MARIOTTI ON SAMMY AND RACE: Jay Mariotti has a very good column in today's Chicago Sun-Times on the Sosa corked bat controversy and race. The notion that the Sammy Sosa corked bat episode is a big deal because of race is ridiculous. Sosa is the biggest name in baseball not just now but for the past five years. Obviously it is going to be a big story. The story was played up too much but not because of his race. The story was played up because of who Sosa is, not because he is a black Latino. |
