FRIDAY'S GAME: What a wild, crazy game. We caught two breaks in extra innings which helped us win, but we will take it. I have to agree with Kimm's decision to have Borowski bat in the 12th with two outs. The odds just are not that good of scoring a run in that situation and the bullpen was thin. Friday, July 12, 2002
STARK'S AWARDS: Jayson Stark on espn.com gives his Least Valuable Player award in the National League to Moises Alou. Stark also gives the American League Rookie of the Half Year to Eric Hinske. In case you forgot Andy MacPhail traded Hinske to Oakland for Miguel Cairo and the right to keep the one, the only, the not so great Scott Chaisson. Way to go Andy. MARIOTTI NAILS IT: Jay Mariotti nails it today in the Chicago Sun-Times. Cubs fans will give Bruce Kimm a chance but we have seen this bring in a pal of the GM (and lose) game before and would feel a lot more confident if we had someone who had a successful record at the major league level. It sure sounds like Jim Hendry has made up his mind that Kimm is going to be our new manager no matter what. The only way Kimm doesn't get the job full-time is if the Cubs get even worse. If Kimm is just slightly below .500 Kimm will get the job full-time and we will probably hear MacPhail and Hendry mouthing something like, "You can't judge him by his record." Blah. Blah. Blah. THE CHRISTENSEN "GENTLEMAN": Ben Christensen's career may be over (did it ever really begin?) because it appears he needs "Tommy John" surgery. For the Cubs sake I hope he can recover and be an effective major league pitcher for us but it really is hard to feel much sympathy for him. The Cubs have said that Christensen is actually a good person but throwing at the head of someone standing in the on deck circle because your coach told you to shows he is either really susceptible to coercion or a moral idiot. GLYNN'S GONE: The Cubs have fired 3rd Base Coach Gene Glynn and brought back Dave Bialas to the coaching staff. The move is not a shock since Glynn was a Baylor loyalist on the staff. Glynn's tenure will be remembered for making some really bad decision on sending runners back in 2000; and getting ejected in a game against the Colorado Rockies last season for arguing with home plate umpire Angel Hernandez on a bad call at home plate which also got 7th Inning Stretch singer Steve McMichael tossed for saying, "And don't worry about that home plate umpire, I'll have some speaks with him after the game." Other than that Glynn was rather forgetable. Wednesday, July 10, 2002
SELIG'S REVERSE MIDAS TOUCH: Bud Selig continued to show his reverse midas touch of everything he touches turns into a disaster by having the game declared a 7-7 tie with no MVP. What another slap in the face to the fans. The 73rd All Star Game like Ted Williams appears to be forever frozen in time. O CANADA (CENSORED): The Fox Television Network which has never been synonymous with class continued its classless tradition of showing commercials during the singing of O Canada at the All Star Game. ALL-STAR PRE-GAME: Could the All-Star Game pre-game festivities take any longer? A game that was supposed to begin at 8:20 P.M. EDT started at 9:05 P.M. EDT. Monday, July 08, 2002

CHIPMUNK: Chip informed us in the ninth inning that, "Wes Helms is one of a trio of three first basemen used by the Braves." CUP OF JOE: In the first inning of the game on Saturday night Joe Carter said that he was surprised that Corey Patterson was not in the line-up. If anyone heard Bruce Kimm's press conference two hours before the game you knew why Patterson was not playing. Patterson was injured. Way to do some game preparation Joe. DEJA VU ALL OVER AGAIN: If you are like me and you never got a chance to see Ted Williams play baseball, well we might get that chance in the future. Rumors have it that Ted Williams' body was frozen to be unfrozen when new technology comes along. I can see the news story now. April 12, 2460 --500 years after Ted Williams hit a home run in what was thought to be his final at bat Williams returned to the Red Sox after advancements in cloning and reverse aging technology allowed Williams to be brought back to life as the 23 year old he was in 1941 when he hit .406. In other baseball news the Chicago Cubs unveiled a revised plan to expand the Wrigley Field bleachers and add parking to Wrigley Field. Previous plans to expand the ballpark have been opposed by neighborhood residents for over 450 years. The Cubs are looking to win their first National League pennant in 515 years. |
